iron infusions

Intravenous Iron Therapy

At Merrindale Medical Centre, we offer iron infusion therapy for eligible patients with iron deficiency where oral iron supplements may be ineffective, poorly tolerated, or unsuitable.

Iron infusions deliver iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) drip, allowing the body to replenish iron stores more efficiently. Treatment is provided in a monitored clinical environment by trained healthcare professionals.

What Is Iron Deficiency?

Iron is essential for the production of healthy red blood cells and oxygen transport throughout the body. Low iron levels can contribute to a range of symptoms that may affect daily functioning and overall wellbeing.

Common symptoms of iron deficiency may include:

Fatigue or low energy
Shortness of breath
Dizziness or headaches
Reduced concentration
Hair thinning or hair loss
Pale skin
Restless legs
Reduced exercise tolerance

Who May Benefit From an Iron Infusion?

Iron infusions may be considered for patients with:

Confirmed iron deficiency
Iron deficiency anaemia
Poor tolerance to oral iron supplements
Inadequate response to oral iron therapy
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Pregnancy-related iron deficiency
Gastrointestinal conditions affecting iron absorption
Chronic disease associated with low iron stores
Pre-operative iron deficiency where rapid replacement is required

Suitability for treatment will be assessed by your doctor following review of your symptoms, medical history, and blood test results.

The Procedure

Iron infusions are performed at the clinic by trained clinical staff under medical supervision.

During the procedure:

A small IV cannula is inserted into a vein, usually in the arm.
The iron solution is administered slowly via intravenous infusion.
Patients are monitored throughout treatment.
Following the infusion, a short observation period may be required.

The appointment duration may vary depending on the type of iron preparation used, but most appointments take approximately 30–60 minutes.

Risks and Side Effects

As with any medical treatment, iron infusions may have potential side effects and risks. Most side effects are mild and temporary, however rare allergic or hypersensitivity reactions can occur.

Possible side effects may include:

Headache
Nausea
Flushing
Muscle or joint aches
Temporary staining or bruising at the injection site
Dizziness

Your treating doctor will discuss the benefits and risks of treatment and determine whether an iron infusion is appropriate for you.

Before Your Appointment

Patients may be required to complete blood tests prior to treatment to confirm iron deficiency and assess suitability for infusion therapy.

Please inform your doctor if you:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding
